Birdwatching Courses
Join me on immersive birdwatching courses in my home county of Suffolk, where full-day walks and multi-day residential programmes combine expert tuition, fieldcraft and hands-on experience to help you identify and understand birds in the context of their habitats.
Wakelyns Bird Walks
Set within the pioneering agroforestry project at Wakelyns, these full-day Bird Walks (6am-2pm) offer an immersive introduction to woodland and garden birds for beginners and more experienced birdwatchers alike. Beginning early to catch the dawn chorus at its best, we spend the day exploring the farm’s diverse habitats, learning how to identify species through behaviour, shape, plumage, song and call, building the confidence to separate even the trickiest lookalikes. Through guided fieldcraft, careful observation at distance and close study of birds around the farm, the course develops both practical skills and deeper understanding. The course ends with an exceptional seasonal lunch prepared by Silva, inspired by Wakelyns’ own produce, provides a delightful end to an immersive day out in the field.
£50 per person.
Field Studies Council: Bird ID Courses
Set within the landscapes surrounding Flatford, this residential birdwatching course in association with the Field Studies Council offers an in depth exploration of birds across the changing seasons. Running once every season, the programme reveals how migration, behaviour, plumage and song shift throughout the year. From spring arrivals and breeding activity to autumn passage and wintering flocks. Through expert tuition and guided fieldwork, we will develop practical identification skills, learning to interpret shape, movement, habitat use and vocalisations with growing confidence. Based at Flatford and complemented by visits to nearby habitats, the course combines structured learning with extended time in the field, allowing participants to build both technical ability and ecological understanding. With full board accommodation available for resident participants and in-course transport provided, this multi-day experience offers the space to slow down, observe closely and deepen your connection to birds in every season.
